Sprained Thumb

Surgical Options

If the ulnar collateral ligament has been completely torn, doctors at the FHCH Sports Medicine Program may recommend surgery. Fragments of the bone that are pulled away when the ligaments tears may be removed or returned to their correct positions.

After surgery a short arm cast or a splint may need to be worn to protect the thumb ligament for 6 to 8 weeks while the injury heals.
