Bursitis is not always infectious. However, if an infection in the bursa is present or the condition doesn’t improve with antibiotics or the removal of fluid from the elbow, surgery may be required. Surgery to remove the bursa is usually performed on an outpatient basis and does not disturb the muscle, ligament or joint structure.
